Who We Are
Marlin’s Journal is an independent digital publication based in Toronto, Canada. We launched in 2024 with a simple conviction: that the best stories in technology, science and culture deserve time, depth and rigour — things the modern information economy has largely abandoned in favour of speed.
Our name is a nod to the marlin — a fish known for its speed, precision and ability to navigate vast oceans. We aim to embody those qualities in our journalism: fast enough to be relevant, precise enough to be trusted, and willing to explore the depths that others skip over.
Our Mission
Marlin’s Journal exists to bridge the gap between academic rigour and accessible storytelling. We believe that technology, science and culture are not separate spheres — they are entangled. AI policy shapes artistic creation. Scientific discoveries reshape cultural narratives. Cultural movements drive technological adoption. Our coverage reflects these intersections.
We produce long-form analysis, investigative features, data-driven research and carefully curated interviews with the people shaping our shared future. Every piece we publish is fact-checked, edited and designed to reward the reader’s attention rather than exploit it.
Editorial Team
Sarah Chen — Editor-in-Chief
Sarah spent fifteen years as a science and technology correspondent for The Globe and Mail and the CBC before founding Marlin’s Journal. She holds a Master of Journalism from the University of British Columbia and a BSc in Physics from McGill. Sarah oversees all editorial operations and writes regularly on the intersection of science, policy and culture.
Marcus Okafor — Senior Technology Editor
Marcus is a former software engineer turned journalist. After a decade writing for Wired, MIT Technology Review and Ars Technica, he joined Marlin’s Journal in 2024 to lead our technology coverage. He specialises in AI, open source software, and the political economy of Big Tech.
Priya Desai — Science Editor
Priya holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Toronto and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute before transitioning to science journalism. She has written for Nature, Science and Quanta Magazine. Priya leads our coverage of biotechnology, climate science and space exploration.
James Tremblay — Culture Editor
James is a cultural critic and essayist whose work has appeared in The Walrus, The Atlantic and The New Yorker. He holds an MA in English Literature from McGill and brings a literary sensibility to our coverage of art, media, technology and the changing texture of contemporary life.
How We Work
Every article published in Marlin’s Journal goes through a three-stage editorial process:
- Research and drafting. The author gathers primary sources — interviews, datasets, original documents — and writes a thorough first draft with full attribution.
- Fact-checking. A second team member independently verifies every factual claim against the cited sources. Claims that cannot be verified are removed or labelled.
- Editorial review. The relevant section editor reviews for clarity, structure, fairness and adherence to our editorial policy before signing off.
Corrections: when we publish something that proves to be incorrect, we correct it prominently at the top of the article with a dated note. Readers can report errors to [email protected].

Independence
Marlin’s Journal is editorially independent. We do not accept payment for coverage. Our editorial team makes all content decisions without input from advertisers, sponsors or investors. When we publish sponsored content, it is clearly labelled as such and produced by a separate team.
